I was having lunch with a friend who was in video production. I said, "It would be fun to do a TV show about the desert." Next thing I knew, this old print journalist, with a face made for radio, and a voice made for print, was writing, hosting, and producing a desert travel show for KVCR PBS TV. The first season began as The Real Desert with Steve Brown, and the second season aired as Southwest Stories with Steve Brown. The third season, which has the option of going national in distribution to all 350 PBS stations, is waiting on underwriters and sponsors. We'll see if we find them, but reaching 200 million regular viewers sure sounds like a great opportunity.
In this initial episode, we visit Twentynine Palms, spending most of our time at the 29 Palms Inn on the Oasis of Mara. The Inn and the Oasis remain one of my favorite desert destinations. If you're traveling California's Mojave Desert, you owe it to yourself to spend a night or two (or more) at the Oasis of Mara with the 29 Palms Inn. It's a classic desert inn, on an authentic desert oasis. They grow their own organic produce in their Faultline Farms at the oasis, and you can enjoy it for lunch, dinner, or Sunday brunch. There's live music every evening, artwork from local desert artists, and beautiful grounds to stroll.
