Blowing dust presents numerous hazards to desert residents, including those driving on Highway 247 near Lucerne Valley on March 28, 2016. On that afternoon, approximately 14 vehicles, including two tractor-trailer trucks, were involved in accidents due to a dust storm. Around 25 people were hurt, one seriously, and two others taken to area hospitals. The highway had to be closed due to poor visibility.
